How We Can Change the World: To research global hunger is to fall rapidly into a dark and dimly lit rabbit hole of shock and disbelief. The task of ensuring proper nutrition for our most fragile citizens is the greatest concern of our age. Tonight, an estimated 828 million people will go to bed without enough food to sustain their needs. Another 25,000 people will die of starvation 10,000+ of those will be children. And yet the total Global Caloric Supply available for human consumption on a daily basis is 2,855 kcal per person.
Global conflict is the single largest contributor to hunger and starvation. An estimated 60% of hunger occurs in areas “afflicted by war and violence.” According to the UN Refugee Agency, at the end of 2021, 89.3 million people worldwide were “forcibly displaced as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, or human rights violations.” By May 2022, 100 million more individuals had fled their homes globally. This is the equivalent of 56% of the United States population fleeing their homes in under two years. This mass exodus has escalated global starvation concerns to a “food crisis of unprecedented proportions.”
Asylum is “the protection granted by a nation to someone who has left their native country as a political refugee.”
As citizens of the United States, and other global economic leaders, few of us can fully conceptualize hunger’s full weight and impact on the human body. We have the luxury of manipulating hunger to benefit physical, mental, and social health. We view the battle for human survival through the lens of our smart devices as we sit comfortably in our kitchens and break rooms. We watch, between bites, the economic & political upheaval spreading across every continent. From this vantage point, ending world hunger seems a daunting task better suited for the mighty amongst us, and we are content to let them try.
Yet, we have enough food in this world to feed every single person 2,855 calories a day!
World hunger is not a matter of creating food; it is a matter of getting food to the people who need it most.
I recently saw a meme that broke down the path to a six figure salary–$100,000/annually is $274/day; $200,000/annually is $548/day.
Here at Dealer Talk, we may not currently be able to put forward the $315 billion necessary to end world hunger. We are undaunted by the task of offering any fellow member of this world 2,855 calories today.
In our unending effort to be the change we wish to see, we have begun our own dedicated journey to ending the hunger around us. This year, with the help of Covideo and RunMyLease, we were able to raise over $4,000 for our first-ever Fill-a-Cart event. Here in the Las Vegas area, we had the humbling privilege of helping those around us by filling their grocery carts full of as much food as they could gather.
As we continue to grow our cause, we hope that you will participate and share your efforts. We would be honored to add your voice and hands to this endeavor. We know that the more voices we can raise, the more impact we will have on the lives of those around us. For more information on how you can participate in Fill-a-Cart 2023, please visit our website or reach out to us directly at [email protected]
